The US$1.02 billion Xepian-Xe Namnoy Hydropower Dam in Attapeu province, Lao PDR collapsed, causing destruction to lives and property. According to AFP, 5 billion cubic metre of water, which is equivalent to more than 2 million Olympic standard swimming pools were released, causing more than 131 missing and 26 found dead. The damage caused flooding in 6 villages of this province, in which the hardest hit was in Hinlad village and Mai village. Over 1,300 families and 6,600 people fell into homelessness.
Efforts to rescue and evacuate people are stricken in the affected area as well as food and medical assistance is being carried out by Lao officials and the cooperation of international organizations. However, the severe consequences that the Lao people face after the disaster are unimaginable.
The people of Lao PDR are facing a sudden and severe crisis from the breakdown of the hydroelectric dam which led to the loss of people and property. Therefore; Aid is essential and a must.
Project "Rehabilitation Support for Attapeu" initiated by Asean CIO Association seeks for urgent and immediate action. Rallying global support on this vital issue is crucial to saving lives.
At times of crisis like this, one will be able to experience the combined strength of global citizens helping those affected by supporting rebuilding efforts in the wake of catastrophe.
Through this crowdfunding effort, we hope to bring the Lao victims back to their daily routine or better living environment. Proceeds from the campaign will be used for all rehabilitation efforts in various areas of rebuilding Attapeu and her people. Frontend efforts are all basic needs such as infrastructure, housing, water, electricity and more; while backend work may be some mental demand on supporting people in griefs, loss and trauma.
